Why Packaging with a Purpose?

In my November 2024 article Getting Ready for Christmas - feeling Good and Looking After Your Skin, I mentioned our intention to doing away with product specific boxes, and instead using an Azurlis™ version of the Face Cloth Wrapping, using unbleached, natural cotton fibres face cloths that are multi-purpose. These could be used as wash cloths, kitchen cloths, floor cloths, dust cloths, pet wash cloths, garden cloths, garage cloths… you name it! The sky is the limit for face cloth usage, and when the cloths are well used and look like they have no more use, put them in your compost bin.

So, no more throwing away of boxes that can be surprisingly costly to produce, that also have a carbon footprint and that will end-up in the landfill. 

Of course, those of you that enjoy the satisfaction of the beautifully sophisticated box presentation that the high-end cosmetic, perfume and tech companies like Apple, will probably think that this is a crazy move. I agree that it is risky, but Packaging With a Purpose is so core to Azurlis™ philosophy, and realistically, although we may have a use for the occasional beautiful box, most beautiful packaging still gets discarded.

For me though, I really feel strongly about the need to be responsible about packaging, and although Azurlis’ voice is low on the web, if we don’t make small steps to change packaging, nothing will change. 

At Azurlis we are completely in agreement that:

• Goods that are being dispatched from a store to customers all over the world, need to be well packaged. That is a given!
• Products need to be presented with all the relevant information in the packaging.
• When we look at, or are given a product/gift, we feel like Gods or Goddesses, because we feel loved, especially if the gifts are gorgeously wrapped.
• Opening a beautiful box that makes us feel special is vital to make us smile and feel great.

But you can make a gift wrapped in newspaper look a million dollars, depending on what flare you put into it. For me beautiful packaging is a form of art expression, and our skincare is one of my art forms.

What Does the Face Cloth Packaging Look Like?

Below, I’m giving you a peek preview of what the packaging will change to from March 2025. 

Using a draft prototype of one of our products, you can see this next to our beautifully made Face Cloths.

When it’s wrapped it look like that in the next image. I have used some real camellia leaves, but probably just a few paper leaves will be added as we don’t want customers to receive wilted leaves, or even worse, start sneezing because of some allergy to the plant leaves.

This is then put into a generic box, which might include other products, also wrapped in a Face Cloth, and depending on what is ordered and if the wrapping still provides the required protection, there could be 2 products in the same face cloth. This is work in progress to maximise product protection and packaging sustainability, whilst minimising waste.

So, the couriered boxed product could look like the image below:

And once the generic box is closed, it is ready to be dispatched to the couriers.

Take Home Message

Packaging our beautiful products in simple and purposeful ways is not about detracting from the value of the products. Neither is it to “industrialise” the presentation but rather to show us that we can responsibly contribute to sustainability by using less packaging that goes to waste, without detracting from the fact that we all like beautiful moments.

We can still have beautiful moments with simple, cost-effective packaging that is not adding inordinately to the landfill, that is multi-purpose, that still makes you feel great because you are doing good for yourself and your world.

This is a clear example of Azurlis™ philosophy of less is more! And guess what? It works!
